Encouraging creativity is so important early on in life. I have to disregard my anal need for organization and neatness and relish the building of forts in the middle of the living room, mazes meandering through the halls, legos scattered over the floor.
We've also made sure each child has had music lessons - piano, drums and guitar. And let them explore different forms of music. If lyrics became an issue we sat down and talked about them.
As summer break was beginning we sat down and made up a LONG list of things the kids can do with their time. Reading, drawing, biking, running through sprinklers, chalk drawing on the sidewalk, weeding, even cleaning toilets. They have no excuse for saying "I'm bored."
I have a I'm bored jar. If anyone utters those words they must pick a slip of paper of the jar and perform the duty. Here are some examples: Water the Plants; Dust the Furniture; Wee the Backyard; Mop the Bathroom; Vacuum the Furniture; Dust the Floorboards. I have only heard one I'm Bored all summer....but my house is a mess!
