John 19:16-18

Station 2: Receiving the Cross, Geoff Todd

So the soldiers took charge of Jesus. Carrying his own cross, he went out to the place of the Skull (which in Aramaic is called Golgotha).
Here

they crucified Him
,
and with Him two others -
one on each side and Jesus in the middle.

In the Gospel of John the crucifixion account is very simple. It isn't like the Mel Gibson account. John gets right to the point...they crucified him. The act of crucifying was understood in the day. The early church knew the gory details involved in a crucifixion. But today, it is far from understood. It is appalling that a government would institute a form of punishment so vile and inhumane. We focus on the act. John didn't..."they crucified him."
